Neuromuscular Dentistry - Beyond the appearance of a smile.

If you are considering major dental procedures such as reconstruction (including cosmetic dentistry), orthodontics, implants, dentures, or if you suffer head/neck pain or other "TMD" like symptoms, establishing a precise occlusion becomes very important. This is when choosing neuromuscular diagnostic techniques can have a positive and long-term impact on the outcome of treatment.

Neuromuscular dentistry considers the entire system that controls the positioning and function of your jaw. Dr. Smith seeks to establish a jaw position based on a harmonious relationship of the three factors of occlusion - the teeth, muscles and jaw joints. The resulting relaxed muscular jaw position is called the neuromuscular bite.

How is Neuromuscular Dentistry Performed?

Neuromuscular Dentistry begins by relaxing the muscles around the jaw and neck with the use of a TENS device (Myomonitor). The Myomonitor is a battery operated electrical stimulus to the muscles of the facial/jaw area, and the neck/shoulder area, to "exercise" these muscles to cause them to relax.

Tests will be performed using Computerized Electro-Diagnostic Instrumentation that provides detailed objective information about the status of your muscles and joints. Jaw Tracking is used to measure and study the pattern of the jaw opening and closing through its full range of motion. Electromyography (EMG) tests provide information on the activity of key muscles that control the jaw during various functions as well at rest.

The new bite position will allow muscles of the head and neck to be relaxed, eliminating related TMD symptoms, and allow joint healing to begin. The new bite position will also recapture the disk, decompress the joint, and center the atlas (top vertebrae) in its correct position. These changes will have lifelong positive systemic effects.

Neuromuscular dentistry has had the longest and greatest success of any method of jaw position therapy. This treatment is an enormous advantage for patients receiving Aesthetic Full Mouth Reconstruction.
